There is no set national criteria defining an "A" Grade player. There is a rule which states who is not eligible to play in the New Zealand B Grade Championships so you could perhaps say that technically they would be an "A" Grade player. The standard of play between associations varies considerably and someone considered an "A" Grade player within their own regional association may not necessarily be considered an "A" Grade player in another regional association.
