Although the New Zealand Amateur Billiards Championships have been held since 1908 (with the exception of 1909), there was no National Organisation until about 1927 when the New Zealand Billiards Association was formed in Christchurch. The name was changed to the New Zealand Billiards Association and Control Council at a meeting of competitors and delegates from the four provinces – Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago, held at the Commercial Travellers’ Club in Auckland on 3rd September 1935. This stayed the name of the national body until it was changed to the present New Zealand Billiards and Snooker Association at the AGM in Wellington on 31st August 1975.

The NZBSA consists of a Board of up to 10 elected members from within the various local affiliated Billiards & Snooker Associations and meets approximately 4 times a year.

Some of the stated aims of the NZBSA are:

• To be the National Organisation in New Zealand for the administration, management, promotion, development and control of the games of Amateur Billiards and Snooker.
  
  
• To represent New Zealand on the International Billiards & Snooker Federation and any other group the Board sees fit.

• To encourage and promote the games of Amateur Billiards and Snooker as sports to be played in accordance with the principles of fair play and free from performance enhancing drugs.

To facilitate the participation of teams and individuals in the games of Amateur Billiards and Snooker internationally, and to make such rules as it determines are necessary for that purpose.

The various National and Island Championships are held under the auspices of the NZBSA and these tournaments are applied for by the local associations at the annual AGM's. Currently the NZBSA conducts NZ Men's Snooker & Billiards Championships, NZ B Grade Snooker & Billiards Championships, NZ Open Snooker & Billiards Championships (open to NZ & non NZ residents), NZ Seniors (over 40) Snooker Championship, NZ U21 Snooker Championship and both North & South Island Snooker & Billiards Championships. All of these events have certain minimum qualifying criteria for players and for the winners of the Men's Snooker & Billiard titles, the Seniors and the U21's is the added bonus of selection to represent NZ at the various IBSF events (provided they meet the IBSF citizenship policy). Every few years NZ also plays host to the Oceania Snooker & Billiards Championships. The NZBSA has also staged some very successful IBSF World Championships in both Billiards and Snooker and is looking forward to the time when we may once again play host to the world's best amateur Billiards and/or Snooker players.

Local Associations who are affiliated with the NZBSA are Auckland Billiards & Snooker Assn, Bay of Plenty Billiards & Snooker Association, Waikato Billiards & Snooker Association, Hawkes Bay Confederation of Billiard Sports, Capital City Billiards & Snooker Association, Canterbury Billiards & Snooker Association, North Otago Billiards & Snooker Association, Southland Billiards & Snooker Association, NZ Womens Billiards & Snooker Assn 2009 and NZ Billiards & Snooker Referees Assn. Unfortunately there are a few local associations who are currently in recess but it is hoped to be able to revive these areas in the not too distant future. Each Local Association host graded events within their regions as well as NZBSA sanctioned Ranking events. Some of these Ranking events also double as qualifying tournaments for any further selections to IBSF World events.

If your wish is to represent NZ at a World or International Billiards or Snooker events you need to be registered through an NZBSA affiliated association and then by playing & performing at the right level in the various tournaments you can fulfil your dream. There is also a citizenship qualification that must be satisfied before anyone can represent NZ at international events.

The objectives of the NZBSA are:

1.1 To be the national organisation in New Zealand for the administration, management, promotion, development and control of the games of Billiards and Snooker.

1.2. To represent New Zealand on the International Billiards & Snooker Federation and any other group the Board sees fit.

1.3. To encourage interest, participation, and achievement in the games of Billiards and Snooker in New Zealand.

1.4. To organise, promote and facilitate Billiards and Snooker competitions and events in New Zealand under such rules as the Board shall determine.

1.5. To publicise and to enforce the code of laws of the International Billiards & Snooker Federation for the proper conduct of the games of Billiards and Snooker.

1.6. To encourage and promote the games of Billiards and Snooker as sports to be played in accordance with the principles of fair play and free from performance enhancing drugs.

1.7. To facilitate the participation of teams and individuals in the games of Billiards and Snooker internationally, and to make such rules as it determines are necessary for that purpose.

1.8. To provide information and assistance, resources and opportunities for communication with and between members of the Association.

1.9. To do all such things and activities as are necessary, incidental or conducive to the advancement of these objects.
